Short History of ORVOAD
In the spring of 1985 a small group of faith based organizations, along with The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross sent a letter to churches in the Portland area to announce the formation of a new disaster preparedness organization in Oregon. This was the founding momentum that quickly became ORVOAD. During their first meeting on May 8th, 1985 at the Red Cross building at 4200 SW Corbett in Portland, Oregon participants discussed the skills and assets their individual organizations brought to disaster in an effort to avoid duplication and assure the right resources were placed at the right location at the right time.
In over 35 years of uninterrupted service to individuals and families impacted by disaster, Oregon VOAD has pulled together faith-based and non-governmental organizations active in disaster to help rebuild and restore. From these early days we have clearly and consistently reached out to all communities in our state and worked closely with Oregon Emergency Management and FEMA Region X to assure the resources and skills of member organizations are available to all.
Today over 40 faith-based and non-governmental organizations with national or regional disaster response capabilities make up the membership of Oregon VOAD. Our strength as an organization resides not only within the massive resources and assets of our members, but also with our strong ties to government disaster response agencies such as Oregon Emergency Management and FEMA. Oregon VOAD is a constantly growing group of organizations that have a great deal of experience in disaster response and a heart to work with people impacted by disaster.
